Message: What we Need
Foundational Scripture: Luke 10:42
Intro: When I was 18 years old I had a good car that was paid for and in great shape. However, I wanted another car that I convinced myself that I needed, so I sold my, paid for, in great shape car and went into debt to purchase the one I needed 😂
Not long after that I decided to go to Bible college, where I quickly discovered that I could not pay for the car, afford the insurance and pay for the fuel and maintenance. So after that first year in school I sold the car and bought an old used car and learned a valuable lesson. There is a lot of difference between what I wanted and what I needed.
In Luke 10 Mary is faced with a decision, what does she want or what does she need. According to Jesus, she chose wisely. There are a lot of things that we can learn from this passage and the exchange between Martha and Jesus, one is don’t let what others expect from you determine what you choose, Martha certainly expected her to join in the preparation of the food. She made that abundantly clear, perhaps even the disciples expected her as a woman in that society to be the one to function as a hostess, to join in the preparation of the meal. Regardless Mary didn’t allow these expectations to determine what she chose. Also, as well, make sure that you focus on what is needed over what you might feel like you might want to do.
What I mean, is I’m sure that there was a part of Mary that wanted to help her sister or a part of her that wanted to be a good hostess, perhaps a part that didn’t want to trample all over social norms or traditions. Yet she didn’t allow this to influence her choice to seek what was needed over what was wanted. Which brings us to the big question,
What do we need to do?
- Listen to Jesus- others may expect us to choose to listen to a plethora of voices when in fact only one is needed. In Jesus words are life, redemption, restoration, renewal, hope, peace, grace, mercy and above all Love. Hear now the words of almighty God, the maker of Heaven and Earth- While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with Him I am well pleased. Listen to Him!” (Mt.17:5) When comes to the decision of which voice to listen to the only voice we need is Jesus
- Resist distractions- the voices in this world will tell you that you need so many things, position, power, wealth, recognition, leverage, revenge. Let me assure you these are only distractions, because they are temporary and often unattainable. Yet the things that matter, Love, peace, hope, restoration, forgiveness, mercy and grace are not only eternal, because they come from the heart of God but attainable because He has offered them to us freely through Jesus. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. (Rom.12:2) The danger of giving in to the distractions is that like Martha we begin to tell Jesus what to do instead of asking Him what He wants us to do.
- Stop sweating the small stuff - The small stuff is anything that moves us from the will of God and puts our will before His. What I mean is this, Martha is clearly upset but most likely it will pass and even if it doesn’t it’s something that Mary has no control over. Jesus says what she has chosen will not be taken away from her. The will of God is to be the purpose of our lives in Jesus. Whatever we pass on for the sake of growing closer in our relationship with God is small stuff. I recognize that this is a tough concept to wrap our heads around but this is exactly the reason Jesus said But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. (Mt.6:33) Put the need of your soul first, to know God, then the small stuff will fall into place, so don’t sweat it.
- Put Jesus first- I know there are a multitude of things that call for first place. Mary, like us in the moment, must have been momentarily overwhelmed, but she made the right choice, she chose Jesus over everything in her life. In this moment she had the clarity that we all need, that Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” ( Acts 4:12) for His is the name that is above every name,10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,11 and every language acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Phil. 2:9-11) Jesus is first in all creation and we need to choose Him as first in our lives. If you're looking for a good example of this in the public arena Scottie Scheffler, the PGA golfer, is a great example, when asked about how golf fit into his life… golf was the 4th most important in his world His priority list is: Jesus, His wife, His newborn, and then golf.
Conclusion:
When it comes to what we need in our lives the world tells us everyday that there are so many things. Yet the truth remains, there is only one, that Jesus is the King and Savior of our lives. Choose Him today!

Message: What we Need
Foundational Scripture: Luke 10:42
- When you have a problem, who do you listen to? Do you talk to your parents, peers, or maybe even your preacher?
Read Matthew 17:5. Who are we supposed to listen to?
- Martha was definitely distracted by what needed to be done. Jesus was literally teaching and Martha was fussing about what her sister wasn’t doing. She told Jesus to tell her sister to help her. She told Jesus what to do. Where did Martha go wrong? Can you identify with Martha?
But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. (Mt.6:33) Jesus literally tells us to seek him first. Everything else will fall into place. All those disciples were grown men. None of them were starving. Like Martha we need to stop sweating the small stuff. What are some things that you are letting get in the way of your relationship with Jesus?

Escritura fundamental: Lucas 10:42
- Cuando tienes un problema, ¿a quién escuchas? ¿Hablas con tus padres, compañeros o tal vez incluso con tu predicador? Lea Mateo 17:5.
